Daily Mirror Correspondent Killed In Afghanistan
In a Southern Afghanistan explosion, 39-year-old Rupert Hamer the defence correspondent with the Sunday Mirror has been reportedly killed. The explosion that resulted of a crude bomb at Nawa, also killed a marine of the U.S. and a soldier from Afghan army, reported Britain military on Sunday.
The vehicle carrying Rupert Hamer, 43-year-old Philip Coburn and a patrol comprising of U.S. marine, was suddenly struck by the crude bomb that has been described by the Britain’s military as a ‘makeshift’ one, leaving Rupert and an Afghan soldier dead while Coburn alongside four other marines seriously injured.
The family of Rupert that comprises of his wife Helen and three lovely kids was informed about the sad incident by the Defence Ministry. Rupert and Coburn who had joined the American military on the Eve of the New Year were supposed to stay with them during a month-long trip. The purpose of their being embedded with the marines of the United States was to do the coverage on fresh gush or surge in the southern region of Afghanistan.
It wasn’t for the first time that Rupert had landed in the war zones since he had survived four trips of a awestricken region of Afghanistan while the other veteran reporter had also been to Iraq, Rwanda and Afghanistan, respectively. In her subsequent statement in Sunday Mirror, Tina Weaver the editor revealed that Rupert was of the opinion that best place to cover a war for reporting would be the front line.
The hard work and dedication of both the veterans towards their profession seemed to seriously impress Bob Ainsworth the Defence Minister with whom, both Rupert and Coburn had few trips in the recent past. Since December 30, it was the second incident that claimed the life of a journalist; 34-Michelle Lang of Calgary Herald was first one to be killed in the same fashion.
